Today I thought it would be fun to look at some of the gorgeous wallpaper trends that seem to be popping up everywhere. Over the last couple of months, I have been blown away by the huge surge in designers using wallpapers that are showing up all over Houzz and Pinterest. Wallpapers have slowly been making a comeback in the last year or two but all of the sudden they are back! In fact, they are back in a very big and gorgeous way.
I need to premise all of this by saying that as much as I have always loved wallpaper, I’m not quite to the point of papering a whole room or larger space. I think if you lived through the wallpaper craze in the 90’s {flashback- grapevine kitchen border paper and dining room floral papers}, you’re probably like me and will take it slow jumping in the waters! I do think a small powder room, an entry way or one statement wall is the perfect way to dip your toes into the papered waters. Especially after taking a peek at how wallpapers are being used today!
1) Bold Geometric Patterns
Bold geometric patterns are the perfect place to start because this is probably the most popular trend out there right now in papers. The geometric/bold patterns are mirroring all of the popular fabric design patterns that are popular today:
Interior Designer Kelly Wearstler was one of the first designers to not only warm us up to thinking about using wallpaper again, but she ignited the geometric patterned trend more than two years ago with her amazing “Imperial Trellis” design:

The great news is that we are seeing more and more of our favorite designers, like Kelly Wearstler, collaborating with the wallpaper companies and coming out with amazing collections of papers. It makes perfect sense to work with the designers! These collaborations have helped fueled the resurgence of wallpapers.
One of my favorite collections/collaborations was recently launched from Australian designer Anna Spiro for Porters Paints:
2) Glasscloth
Ok, so if you’re not quite ready to jump in the water with the bold geometric patterns, maybe you can dip your toe in the more subtle and beautiful waters of the grasscloth papers that are also big right now:
I personally love grasscloth coverings because the textures and variation and shading of color are so subtle, but yet they still make a great statement and impact through the natural texture and color. These days, you can pretty much find any color your heart desires in a grasscloth as well and the colors.
3) Metallics
Metallics are not only hot right now with handbags and shoes, they’re also a hot trend for the walls:
4) Paintable/Textured Papers
I have shared several posts in the past regarding paintable, textured wallpaper and have used this covering in several places in my home. Right now this is my favorite trend because its another subtle way to make a statement on a wall via the texture but you have more control with choosing the exact color and finish with your paint.
This is great way to dip your toes in the wallpaper waters if you’re not ready for bold:

A couple months ago, I used the paintable textured paper in my guest bath and I am in love with how beautiful it turned out:
I shared a post about my guest bath revamp and a tutorial for the best way to work with the paintable textured wallpapers. If you want to learn more about using this product in your home, just click the image directly below:
If you want to see more paintable paper options, you can look at this post I did a few months ago highlighting some of my favorites on the market today:
5) Novelty Papers
Novelty papers are becoming really popular on the market today and there as some fun and beautiful options out there. I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot more in this fun wallpaper trend.
I love these typography papers from Graham Brown:
There are quite a few novelty papers on the market today with decorative molding/architectural accents:
A lot of wallpaper companies are offering a fun blackboard wallcovering that is a great idea in a kids room, kitchen or like this fun idea, in the dinning room:
These five gorgeous wallpaper trends are just the tip of the iceberg! I would love to know which paper and trend is your favorite? Let me know in the comment section below. I am so curious about what may/may not be peeking your interest in these papers! Are you open to wallpapering or do you need to warm up to the idea?

Hi Cindy, Great post! I’m also a huge lover of wallpaper, especially grass cloth and bold geometric patterns. I just wanted to say thanks for including one of our projects in your round up of examples (the navy and white geometric wallpaper with coral ikat chair in the foreground). It was such a thrill to see our photo included with all these other great examples! Thanks so much!!

I’d love to know the brand of wallpaper from the Pink Chandelier pic. I’ve bee looking for quite a while to find blue on white trellis as opposed to white on blue. I have another pic that is the exact same wallpaper but can’t find the maker. Thanks!
