Hello Creativity Exchange Readers! Jenny from Evolution of Style here and I’m excited to talking color at The Creativity Exchange. Cyndy and I are both admitted paint geeks, so I always enjoy spotlighting some of my favorites. Today I’m talking about a great neutral and a crowd favorite – Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray.
I love the versatility of this color, and how it looks beautiful in just about any room in the house. It sets the stage for a timeless tone on tone look.
Here it is, used in a classic entryway.
Again, in this bathroom, Edgecomb Gray looks as though it was made to work with neutral palettes – the accents of black and white work perfectly with Edgecomb Gray as the backdrop.
A dining room – warm and welcoming, yet timeless, don’t you think?
And let’s not forget about the kitchen – I love that it also plays so well with wood tones. The same can’t be said of some colors.
Again, look how stunning this hallway looks with the mix of wood floors and the Edgecomb Gray walls. Perfection. The windows and lighting aren’t too shabby either.
It really allows the natural wood and stone elements in this kitchen to shine, doesn’t it?
While Edgecomb Gray serves as a great stage for a neutral, tone on tone look, it also works as a perfect backdrop for punches of color. Look how perfect it is in this sunny bedroom?
I’m smitten with how it looks as an exterior paint color with the pretty pops of aqua.
The Edgecomb Gray wall color allows the blue sofas take center stage in this living room.
And what catches your eye when you glance into this bathroom? The mossy green vanity and the soft blue door.
Do you have Edgecomb Gray in your home? Do you use it with pops of color, or in keeping with a more neutral look? Either way you go, it serves as a backdrop for a multitude of options.
For more paint inspiration and project, you can find my at the blog Evolution of Style.

I have it in my living room and love it! The room doesn’t get a whole lot of natural light and Edgecomb Gray is is perfect without making things feel dark.
Cyndy says
That’s so great to hear! I have seen Edgecomb at night in artificial light and it looks good and it’s so good to hear that it’s pretty during the day w/o natural light as well. Thx for your note! 🙂

We just painted our two story entry Edgecomb Gray. I love how neutral it is (we painted over tuscan gold!) and it has so much depth. I have turquoise accents and they pop beautifully against it. Thank you for the beautiful images in this story which just confirm our choice of color!
Cyndy says
I agree Lisa, Edgecomb (even though it’s lighter) is very rich in depth. It also looks beautiful at night, which is really hard to find in a color. I agree, Jenny did a great job with this post and I too am inspired by all of the inspiration that she found. Thrilled to hear you love your new entry way! What a dramatic difference to go from Tuscan Gold to Edgecomb. I bet it is so beautiful.
Bert says
I love Edgecomb Gray! I used it in a family room in out last house and got so many compliments. As you said, it’s also a great backdrop color. I’m already thinking of places i can use it in my new house. Beautiful inspiring pictures and good article on Edgecomg Gray. Thanks.
Cyndy says
Thanks for your note! Jenny did a great post and I too love all of her ideas and inspiration images! So glad to hear that you too love the color. 🙂
Carla says
Used this wonderful color throughout a home we own. Can’t say enough good things about it. I restyle furniture and am thinking why have I not used this color before now in my projects!
Cyndy says
Thanks for your note Carla! I’m right there with you, Edgecomb is one of the most stunning warm grays out there! Jenny has really found some great inspiration images and I’m like you, I need to use more of this color in my home! Thx for stopping by!

Love this color! Plan to paint our 2 story foyer this color…it looks like it will transition well into Restoration Hardware “Cappuccino” painted living room (warm taupe-y beige)and upstairs, into the master bedroom that will be painted BM Stonington Gray.
Wendy says
I have edgecomb gray in my living room and am now painting the 2 guest rooms in it..absolutely a perfect neutral for someone who likes to change up the accessories often.A neutral that will get so many compliments!
Robin says
Hi! I went from alexandria beige in my living room to edgecomb gray–and I love it. I only lasted 2 years with the Alex beige in my living room. It was cozy but I craved a lighter paint color. The edgecomb showcases my furniture nicely and is sophisticated. I am also a big fan of revere pewter as well and have recently painted a few rooms with that. Both of these colors sing to my soul lol. I will be painting my kitchen soon and am on the lookout for a tad bit warmer neutral paint color to pair with the edgecomb in my living room. Paint transforms your space instantly! Can’t wait.
Julie says
Hi…Did you find a ‘tad bit warmer’ neutral color for your kitchen? I am looking for the same thing!
Jackie says
Tapestry Beige is beautiful! More beige/off white than gray, but I just painted my master bedroom and I LOVE IT!
Karen says
Do you think this color could work against window treatments that are a mustard yellow/burgundy tiole pattern?
Marlo says
I love Edgecomb Grey was thinking about using it in my living room. Was thinking about a feature wall that includes a stone fir place. Does anyone know what the blue grey color is shown on the ceiling of the first picture of the foyer?
Thanks,
Marlo
Cindy Morhouse says
I have the same question! What color is that foyer ceiling?
Angela says
I painted my hallway Edgecomb gray but I’m not liking the undertones – seems more beige or even green when I wanted it to look gray. If I have a gray entryway table and accents do you think this will help bring out the gray and complement the wall color or do you think it will highlight that the wall color is not a true gray? Thanks for your thoughts!
Cyndy says
Lighting in a space can really impact the undertones in a color. I’m suspecting that you may not have a lot of natural light in the space for those colors to come out in Edgecomb. Yes, adding gray in accents, art, etc.. will help pull out some of the gray in the color. If repainting is an option and you don’t have a lot of natural light, I would suggest a cooler gray to offset the warmth being pulled from the color in the artificial light. Hope that helps! Something around the color Gray Clouds by Benjamin Moore is where I would start. 🙂
Angela says
Thank you Cyndy! Yeah, not a lot of natural light and we have natural hardwood floors which must be bouncing off the walls too. we just moved into a new house and had it all painted before we moved in so repainting isn’t an option at least for a while. I’ll keep persevering with adding gray – I have a gray runner/carpet on stairway already, maybe I’ll add a runner at the front door too. If I add lighting with table lamps in entry table any thoughts on what color lamps could help? thank you!
Cyndy says
You know Angela, Edgecomb is such a beautiful color, even with those green tones jumping out in Edgecomb, the contrast with all your gray accessories-contrasting with lighter Edgecomb will be really beautiful! Go white with your lamps. I would look for ways to incorporate white along with the gray. You will get it, especially if you keep adding more white. I would point you into adding more white instead of gray. I think that’s really what you are really looking for subconsciously-to simply lighten up your entry way. You’ll get there and you’ll LOVE it! I’m here if you need me. 🙂
Cyndy says
and let me just add one more thing… If you accessorize with cool grays and bright whites (no creams), the warmth (green undertones) in the Edgecomb will instantly harmonize and balance. But again, I would bring in as much white as you can and switch out your bulbs in your lamps and overhead lighting into cool white and you will have a gorgeous entry! 🙂
Angela says
Thanks Cyndy! I’ll now look for a nice white table rather than gray and see how that goes.
Melissa says
You might also try playing with the light tone from the artificial lights. Go to a really cold/white lightbulb and you may find the green goes aaa.
Gita says
Is Edgecomb gray a good color for the basement where there isn’t much in natural light and I will probably always have can lights on. I am going for a more gray color than beige and thought the Revere Pewter would be too dark. Any thoughts?
Cyndy says
Yes! Edgecomb would be perfect in the space and not go yellow undertone under can lights. Also, look at Sherwin Williams Repose Gray as well. Stunning gray in artificial light as well. Repose would help to keep it light and fresh! 🙂
Gita says
Thanks. I think we might actually like Repose Gray better in the space. Hoping the blue undertones don’t come out too much. Thanks for recommending the color!
Molly Kelly says
Thanks for this post! We are repainting the interior of our house, and I’m wondering if this will be too much to do in the entire house. We have white trim/doors. We have a darker gray wood floors, but then in the bedrooms lighter carpet. Should I look to do a different color in the bedrooms? Something dark? Any thoughts on what would go well with that? Sorry for all of the questions!
Cyndy says
I think Edgecomb would be a stunning whole home color and would look beautiful with everything you mentioned. Be sure and paint a poster board and tape it up just to make sure that you like the color in the lighting. Smoke by Benjamin Moore is a gorgeous bedroom color to look at if you do in fact want a little change. Good luck Molly and keep me posted on what you end up going with! 🙂
Brenda says
what is the best white color to paint trim with edgecomb grey walls in a bathroom and hallways?
Cyndy says
I’m a huge fan of Decorator’s White for trim. It will really contrast and compliment Edgecomb. Decorator’s White from Benjamin Moore has no undertone and is a true white. I hope that helps! 🙂
Sal says
Hello Cyndy! I am looking at this paint as well as a few other similar colors and was set to go with Edgecomb but reading about the green undertones scared me. I have dark gray sofas and tan’ish dining seats. cigar colored wood furniture in the dining and lots of art on the walls. The space isn’t huge so I cant go too dark but love a light blend of beige and gray. White molding to add.
What paint colors will compliment the furniture if charcoal gray sofas are in the room? Thanks!!
Cyndy says
Hi Sal! I would point you towards Gray Owl from Benjamin Moore. It has a warmer undertone instead of the green in Edgecomb. Gray Owl is one of the most popular paint colors right now because it’s a light warm gray that blends beautifully with all tones. I hope that helps. 🙂
Margaret says
What would be a good color to paint kitchen cabinets if walls are edgecomb gray, trim is decorator’s white and have wood floor. Granite countertop has black tan gray in it.
Tania says
I’m trying to find a neutral like edgecomb gray to tone down a very warm/tan/gold Tuscan decorated house. Right now my walls are BM Oat Straw and everything is just too brown. Would this color play well with olive green accents, mahogany wood floors and cabinets, brown leather? We also have a ton of colorful artwork in black frames. Thank you!!
Kelly says
Hi Cyndy,
How would you compare Edgecomb Gray to SW Repose Gray? I like both of them in other people’s houses! I’m looking for a good whole house color in my townhouse that has high ceilings but doesn’t have a ton of natural light because of the N-S positioning of the house. I will use SW regardless, just debating Repose Gray or trying to match Edgecomb Gray. Or perhaps another gray all together?
Caroline says
What shade of white did you use on the trim with Edgecomb Gray walls? We want to repaint our kitchen cabinets to complement the walls that are Edgecomb Gray, and are wondering what shade of white to choose.
Madilyn O'Leary says
I LOVE the white color in the first photo (the one with the cabinets and the seat). Do you know what color this is? I would love to use it for my trim and bookshelves since I am painting my walls Edgecomb grey.
Thank you!
Madilyn

I have a hallway with no nature light. Have tried about 7 different beige/neutrals (bar harbour, shaker beige, blond wood, barbados sand). Someone at my local paint store recommended Manchester Tan but I’m wondering if I should try Edgecomb Gray. The bottom of the walls will have box molding so that will be white. I’m trying to brighten the hallway. Hardwood floors have a natural stain. Any suggestions?
Cyndy says
Manchester will be too dark and warm in your hallway. Especially too warm with artificial light in the evening. Yes! Edgecomb for sure would be one to sample. I would also point you to Eider White, which is one shade lighter on the same card as Repose Gray. I would sample both of those colors on poster board and look at it with and without overhead light. 🙂

Hi Cindy~
I am trying to choose colors from afar for a home we bought out of state. I painted Shaker Beige, Clay Beige, and a few others and they look quite dark. Edgecomb Gray seems to be the color of choice at the moment. Our family room, kitchen face East and front of the house faces West. I would tend to use wheat/creamy/blues/ in decorating and wonder if that works with the green everyone is seeing in this color?
Thank you so much for your suggestions… I am struggling with choices.

I have an open concept and have to use e same color downstairs and upstairs landing and staircase bc the walls are continuous. the problem is uptairs is all white trim and downstairs is all oak (which I m not painting,) doors, floors, trim, two staircases etc. I really wanted to use revere pewter but feel like it’s too gray to work with the oak but feel like edgecomb is a bit tanner than I wanted. any advice. forgive my typos. It won’t let me go back
Cyndy says
Repose Gray from Sherwin Williams is fantastic and it works beautifully with oak. Has just the right amount of warmth to blend with oak but also has the light gray balance. I would for sure point you that direction. You can read my color spotlight on Repose here:https://www.thecreativityexchange.com/2016/04/repose-gray-sherwin-williams-color-spotlight.html

Thank you sooo much!! Will get a sample. ?

Hi Cyndy, I am going away from golds and just painted SW accessible beige in my kitchen/family room. It came out icy gray in some lights. I have an open floor plan and although most say I should continue with the same color, it looks drab going down my hallway because it doesn’t have good natural light. I painted a couple bedrooms edgecomb gray and I love the color. Would edgecomb gray be ok if it meets accessible beige from hallway to kitchen? Will edgecomb also work with an off white couch and wheat chairs, and gold framed photos? I know those are warm but edgecomb strikes me as a warm neutral.
Stephanie Kaminsky says
I have the same question! Just painted accesssible everywhere- including 2 story foyer, dining room, living room and up a spiral staircase wall into upstairs hallway. It is so drab in the foyer. I want to switch to Edgecomb- but can’t bear the thought of paying to have everything repainted. Would it be ok to do the walls Edgecomb but keep dining and living room Accessible? It is an open floor plan so it will all be seen from many vantage points. Begging for help/advice. Thank you!!!
Maura says
I love this edgecomb grey thinking of using it in a great room with high ceilings lots of like in spring / summer but a darker room with less natural light in the fall/winter. I’m concerned it will be to light / dark. The room has oak ( yellow orange) floors, red brick fireplace. It also transitions into the dinning room kitchen with a small wall separating the two( these are darker rooms less natural light) What would you suggest as a transition color with the edgecomb grey? The next room is the hallway lots of light in summer and darker in winter again need a 3rd transition color to tie all 3 spaces together.
Any suggestions
Steph says
Hi, thank you for the great information! I’ve started painting a North facing dark bedroom with Edgecomb…it is looking a bit muddy and wondering if I should switch to SW alabaster. Thank you for your help!
Laurie Gorter says
I painted Edgecomb Grey over the wood paneling in my family room. I also used white on all of the edging. One of my walls only has paneling on half of the hall. I was wondering if you could recommend a color that would look good with Edgecomb grey and white for my half wall?
Heather says
Hi Jenny, thanks for the post. I came across it as we have Edgecomb Grey in several parts of our house – primarily the entry way, hall ways, and dining room. We are fairly ok with it though it looks more beige-ish than I had intended… but goes well with our other colours. The whole house is centred around a turquoise living room (colour is ash blue by BM).
My issue now is selecting bedroom colours. We have EG in the hallway upstairs (verges on beige-green up there), pikes peak in the bathroom (lovely colour but doesn’t look amazing with the EG), and now we want a final colour for the bedrooms. We were looking at feather gray, silent night, or pale smoke – but I’m anxious that given that our EG is more on the beige side none of these will work well, and worried about coordination with our already very colourful bathroom.
If you have any thoughts I would be grateful for them 🙂
Jennifer says
Hi Cyndy, would you advise on an exterior house trim color? We recently painted our home with a color called plymouth rock and looked long and hard for a light beige trim color to go with it. We tried to stay away from colors with a yellow tint, however the color we finally selected has a yellow tint (mostly seen on darker days when the sun is not out). Do you think that Edgecomb Grey would be a better trim color in this situation?
Kathy says
Good Morning,
I’m re painting in a home with all Brazilian cherry floors and not much light. It’s in the middle of a wooded lot.. I want to have some light reflecting walls to lighten the home up. Not sure if a color with green undertones would make it look like Christmas! Thanks.

Hi, We just bought a townhouse. Would love to use this Edgecomb gray color throuhout the whole place. Wood like ceramic – ceiba color. Was thinking on using Hazelnut glaze kitchen cabinets. Would thse two colors go together or will white kitchen cabinets go better with the walls. Thanks for your answer.
Sue says
Painted our kitchen and great room in edge comb grey and love it. Have simply white trim. Thinking of painting my oak cabinets simply white as well. Any other color suggestions for the cabinets?
Tara Gill says
I painted most of my home in Edgecomb Grey and it looks amazing in all of our rooms regardless of exposure and lighting conditions. It beautifully compliments my pine and oak bedroom furniture sets. It pairs well with my espresso faux wood blinds, my dark cherry Italian dining set, beige carpet and porcelain tiles, etc. Is there any colors Edgecomb Grey doesn’t match? To me it’s literally the most versatile paint I’ve ever come across! I used Balboa Mist (slightly cooler) as well which I like a lot but Edgecomb Grey I prefer only because I find a tad warmer which makes it feel more cosier. I noticed they’re both Chameleon grieges leaning grey or beige depending on lighting conditions.

I am going to paint my open layout home mostly edgecomb. If I wanted to do an accent wall in my living room then what color would you suggest? Revere pewter?
Thanks

I’m painting our bathroom Edgecomb Grey! I’m looking for a darker “greige” paint color for the vanity cabinet. Any suggestions?
Sherrill says
Was wondering if Edgecomb Grey could work with gold upholstered sofa an chair in a traditional print of a taupe color with melon/falllish print. I can think it will go ok everywhere else in house. Not sure on the gold I have right now. At present the walls are very similar to Lenox Tan but lighter. Custom mix.
I put off painting as I have a storage cabinet completely full of quart samples.. I can pull off decor pretty well, but paint colors I’d different….hard. Thank you in advance

I am going to paint my bedroom Edgecomb grey. I want to either paint or stain my bedroom furniture-any suggestions?
Lisa G. says
I know this is an old post but in the foyer picture that shows the dining room, are the walls in the dining room also Edgecomb gray? And the ceiling of the foyer, too? My foyer is painted Edgecomb and I want to get that look with the dining room..
Thank you!

Hi! I’m stuck on paint color selection. I have an open concept living/dining room with lots of natural light, mainly southern, but west and east too. The couches are dark grey and the light terrazzo floors have grey flecks. There are three Persian rugs on top of the terrazzo that have deep red as the predominate color. Is Edgecomb Gray a good choice or something creamier? And which white should I use: white dove, decorator’s white or super white? Thanks!!!
