This post has been a long time coming and so has organizing my spray paints {hubby rolls eyes}… This last weekend, I finally organized all of my cans of spray paint and after I gathered them from the stacks in the garage, my craft room, the back of my car and backyard painting area, I had more than 75 cans! This was after I threw out about 20 cans. I had no idea that I had this many!
I do so many spray painting projects that I tend to buy more cans than I need just to make sure that I have the right color choices. Because of this, I have duplicates of colors that I don’t like but I keep buying over and over. So.. I decided to spray paint post it notes and write the name of each color on it so instead of have to spray each can to find the right taupe, I can now look at my new spray paint cards for the perfect color.
To make things even easier, I also made a poster board of 21 of my favorite colors and colors that I use most frequently, so that I don’t keep buying paint that I will never use. I thought I would share my favorite spray paint colors with you today to help save you time and money on your revamp projects in search of the perfect color.
So here are my favorite colors all together on my poster board:
These 21 colors are mostly neutral colors that I use the most for frame, lamp, accessory and furniture revamps. I didn’t included any bright and bold colors because I rarely use brights and those colors are so project specific.
For light colors, these are my favorite:
It was challenging to edited these images precisely to show the true look of each color but this was the closest I could get. At least this shows you that for instance, Rust-oleum Putty is a lighter taupe than Fossil and Khaki is darker than Cobblestone.
As for my favorite white, I think Rust-oleum is the best white on the market and I also like the paint itself more than any other brand. My favorite color out of all 21 of these paints is the Valspar Satin Warm Gray, which is the most gorgeous color and is perfect for revamping just about anything. It’s amazing how this color looks gorgeous on everything.
For browns and metallics, these are my favorites:
If you’re looking for the perfect espresso dark brown color with a lot of depth, Valspar Brown Velvet is in my opinion, the most beautiful dark brown out there. As for metallics, I am obsessed right now with Krylon’s Brushed Metal Champagne Neavou, which has a beautiful platinum finish. I shared a revamp project on Wednesday here for using Champagne Neauvou as a glaze.
If you’re looking for the perfect chrome, run to the auto parts store and pick up Dupli-Color in chrome because trust me, there is not a good chrome out there in regular spray paint. This chrome is amazing!!
For blues and blacks, these are my favorites:
Krylon Satin Mountain Blue is by far one of the most beautiful blue that I have found in spray paint. It’s very subtle but rich in depth. This is a great color for a quick furniture revamp and it always looks good and doesn’t have any crazy hues in it. I also love Valspar Indigo Streamer, which I have used for years and it is a true indigo blue color and it’s gorgeous and is great for revamping baskets and frames if you’re looking to add some indigo to a room.
For black spray paint, the best black out there in my opinion is made by Color Place (Walmart) and it’s the fast dry black. Color Place Fast Dry Black is a matte finish that is nearly perfect. Trust me on this, no other black comes even close. I also like the Rust-oleum rust reformer in black for my metal pieces for the patio and porch.
This list will probably change for me as more colors come out and change but right now, these are my favorites and the colors that I found (after trying almost everything) are the prettiest and have no strange undertones or weird hues.
I hope my little list will save you some time and money from having to try a lot of different colors to find just the right taupe or blue. I have tried almost every color in search of the best and I think you would be very happy with any of these colors. I have shared a ton of spray paint tutorials and revamps and if you’re looking for some ideas, you can click here.

WOW – you need a “spray paint intervention”. I need one as well. So glad you gave me the heads up on Krylons Mountain Blue – I have a bench that I want to do in blue. The tropical oasis looks intriguing as well. You just saved me from buying many cans of blue just to find the right one.

Ha! Yes, I really do need an intervention! Can’t get enough of that instant gratification Deb! Yes, you will LOVE Mountain Blue! It’s so gorgeous. Tropical Oasis is a fun blue bordering on a muted turquoise if that helps. Have a great weekend Deb and thanks for stopping by!!

What a great idea to have all your colors in one reference spot. I am going to have to check out some of these. I want to try out the black you mentioned from Wal-Mart. 🙂

Thanks so much for this great post. I was looking for a dark brown. I am going to attempt to revamp a gold picture frame, into a dark brown one. I hope it works out! 🙂

Hi, I love the Valspar Warm Gray as well, but I’m having a difficult time locating where I can buy it. Can you tell me where you purchase yours, please?
