A few weeks ago, I pulled together and shared the 2016 Best Selling Sherwin Williams paint colors and as promised, I’m back today to share the best selling Benjamin Moore colors so far for 2016.

Benjamin Moore is normally great about updating their best selling colors regularly on their website but in the last few weeks, there has been some sort of technical glitch. Several of the color sections are either blank, or just have one or two colors. The great news is that I just happened to save the images of their best sellers right before the sections went blank and they stopped updating them.
So let’s jump into the colors.
Grays
No surprise that gray continues to be one of the biggest trends in paint colors for 2016. Stonington Gray from Benjamin Moore is on the cooler side but has been a popular color for several years now.

Balanced grays with a mix of both warm and cool tones have also been very popular this year. Gray Owl is an all-star color that always works well in a variety of lighting situations. Gray Owl is also becoming a very popular cabinetry color because it’s so versatile.

I wasn’t familiar with the color Silver Chain when I saw it pop up on the Benjamin Moore best sellers list for the first time but I really like it and can see why it’s becoming popular. It’s a mid-tone warm gray ad I think we’ll be seeing a lot of this pretty color.
Sterling Silver was one of only two colors on the best sellers section for grays recently. I don’t know if it was glitch or if it’s really a true best seller but I wanted to include it because it’s a beautiful darker warm gray that’s very versatile.

Blues
Blues also continue to trend for 2016. It’s interesting that the biggest blue trend that I see across the various paint companies is the most popular blues all have gray undertones. Having that gray undertone helps to balance and neutralize blues, making these shades very versatile.
Smoke has been an all-star color for Benjamin Moore for several years now. One of the best neutral blues out there in my opinion.

Seattle Gray is another new color for the Benjamin Moore best sellers list and I think it’s another color that will become really popular in the next year. It’s a stunning light blue with that trending gray undertone.
No surprise to continue to see that Van Deusen Blue continues to be a best selling blue because it’s one of the most versatile dark blues out there. Van Deusen has been very popular for at least 5-6 years and I noticed the color being used a lot this last year on cabinetry.

No one is surprised here to see that Hale Navy is still Benjamin Moore’s best selling navy. It’s with good reason! I think it’s the best navy out there.

Greens
Greens with blue/gray undertones have been very popular this last year. In fact, according to all the paint companies, we should trend more into slightly warmer greens in 2017.
Gray Cashmere is a stunning light green with that blue/gray undertone. In spaces with a lot of natural light, this color will lean blue. In spaces with very little natural light, the color leans green.

Other best selling Benjamin Moore greens are Palladian Blue, Woodlawn Blue and one of my favorite colors, Beach Glass.

Whites
Decorator’s White, White Dove and Frostine will always be at the top of the Benjamin Moore best sellers list. These three whites are staple whites.
Decorator’s White is my favorite white because it has a neutral undertone.

I placed Balboa Mist into the white category because on the wall, it’s more of an off-white gray. Another fantastic color and best seller.

Browns/Blacks
Benjamin Moore’s best selling browns and blacks also have a lot of gray undertones. A trend in 2016 that we are seeing across all colors.
Wrought Iron has also been a very popular brown/gray/black. Great color for cabinetry, interior doors and exterior trim.

Benjamin Moore’s tradition black is one of my favorite blacks because it’s a true black.

Lots of great color inspiration from the Benjamin Moore best sellers. I love that there are several new colors to add to our radar.
If you missed the best sellers a few weeks ago from Sherwin Williams, you can find that post here. Here’s the palette below:
Also, if you’re looking for more room inspiration with listed paint colors, I have several boards over on Pinterest here loaded with colors and inspiration.

Thank you for this informative post, BM has such great colors. It seems there aren’t any here you wouldn’t like on the right walls! I really want to try Wrought Iron sometime, it is very intriguing.
I have to admit, although slightly off topic, I’m dying to know what you think about Sherwin Williams’ color of the year, Poised Taupe. I think it looks really pretty, but a lot of the comments I read under articles written about it were pretty negative. Seems people wanted more color.

Thanks for your note Tanya! Honestly, I’m not a fan of the choice and was very surprised. I thought for sure the color would be something like a slightly warm green/blue/gray close to like SW Break Time or something along those lines. I mean, I would have put money on that! lol!
So, I was very surprised. Poised Taupe looks mauve-ish to me and it’s really not anywhere we are heading in color that I have seen. I do think it might make a good cabinetry color but not sure. Even if they had gone up one shade, I think people would have been more excited.
Let’s see what Benjamin Moore comes out with. Will be very interesting! 🙂

I must be a paint color addict, because I find the whole thing so exciting…I can’t wait for the BM color either. Thanks for the response, I was so curious to hear what you think since you are so on-trend with colors. (From what I have seen, the paint companies sure do like offer surprises when it comes to the color of the year.) Have a great day! Off to look up SW Break Time…lol 🙂

Thanks Tanya! Yes, join the paint color addict club! LOL! While the paint companies surprise us each year with their choices, most of the time, we can look ahead in color trends and see that’s where we are heading. That’s why I was thinking SW color would be something like Break Time. I’m willing to bet that BM will do something warm maybe a shade of yellow or a rich darker chocolate with slight gray undertone? We are trending into darker “den-ish_ colors, so that would be a great pick. Sooo… we shall soon find out! 🙂
Tanya says
Okay, now I definitely can’t wait! Thanks!

Hi Cyndy,
Yesterday I refrained from making a bigger comment to your reply, mostly because I do not want you to feel like you have to reply, I’m sure you are super busy!! But now I can’t help but do so. I was going to ask if you think black might be trending (maybe not a color of the year but in the group). Things have been so light recently, and as you noted, people are going den-ish, and after a few years of light colors in my home, then painting my bathroom black, I find that I like having black in my surroundings to ground things. I’m not suggesting numerous black rooms, but accents, doors, etc. This morning I noticed on another blog I read that the headline was about black being the new gray! That made me doubly curious what what your feelings are about black and 2017 trends 🙂 Thanks so much!
Cyndy says
Hey there Tanya! Yes!! Black is really trending right now (like you did in your gorgeous bathroom). I can’t remember if I sent you a note or not but your pictures were awesome and I’m so proud of you for doing that! I agree and think black with a gray/brown undertone will be another big paint color trend for 2017 for sure. I think 2017 is going to be the year for contrast. Dark doors, lighter walls or dark walls, lighter doors, etc.. I’ll be doing the 2017 color forecast in the next couple weeks with more trend details that I have been seeing. Isn’t it so interesting how these color transitions happen? I love it! Thanks for your sweet note Tanya! 🙂

Thank you for your post, very helpful as I continue my journey to select the “right” colors and “right” brand for my home. I really like the way my walls feel painted with BM. My painter likes to Paint with SW but I prefer the feel of BM, any thoughts on that? Although we often hear “it’s just paint” it’s a big job here as we have some tall walls, up to 14 feet so selecting the right color is important. I am currently “trying” to decide a color for my Family Room and we will be installing Barn Doors we had made. I am excited about that too. My color selection is narrowed down to the following: BM Ashland Slate, BM Gray Wisp, BM Gray Owl or BM Silver Chain (new consideration) after reading your article. Please let me know your thoughts on these consideration.
