Over the last few months, I have had so many questions from readers about cabinet paint color trends and how to choose an updated cabinetry color that will be timeless. Â I completely get it! We want to choose a beautiful updated color but a color that we’ll still love years later (after the trends move on to new colors).

It’s so interesting to me because with so many questions from you guys over the last few months, I know a lot of you are in the process of renovating kitchens and bathrooms, or in the planning stages of renovating.  I’m excited for you guys but I know how hard it is to choose just the right colors. So many of you are agonizing over choosing just the right color and it doesn’t have to be that way.

The truth is, while I talk a lot about paint color trends here on the blog, I never choose, or recommend colors solely based on what’s trending. Â Instead, I compromise by choosing an updated color but a muted version of the trendy bold, greige vs. gray or a transitional version of a trendier color. This compromise is where updated timeless colors are discovered, that we’ll love for years to come. Especially when it comes to cabinetry colors.

If you’re interested in more details and specifics of how to compromise and instantly zone in on these timeless colors, I break it all down in my latest article over on Better Homes and Gardens here. I also talk about the biggest color trends in cabinetry colors as well and where we’re heading into 2017.
There was so much more I wanted to include in my BHG article (I’m a little passionate about this) but of course, I am limited on space and the number of images that can fit into the article. What we didn’t have room for in my article was some additional color picks that I pulled together. I wanted to be sure and include them here for you to see after you read the article.

I hope my BHG article helps you guys better zone in on the perfect cabinet paint color for your space. Â My best advice is to choose a color that you will love for years to come but be sure and test it first in the space with the lighting. You can do this by painting the sample color on poster board and taping it to your cabinets. Â Look at the sample in the morning, noon and evening to make sure it will work in all your lighting conditions.
If you want to see more cabinet paint colors in action, as you narrow down your choices, I have multiple boards over on Pinterest here dedicated to paint colors in general and a board dedicated to all cabinetry colors with hundreds of great examples.
Thanks for stopping by today and again, you can find my latest BHG cabinet article here and you can look through all my past BHG articles here. By the way, after you do paint, I would love for you to come back and tell me what you went with and any feedback you have on the color. 🙂
Cheers!

We used SW Alabaster for our kitchen cabinets with the island SW Cityscape. Walls are SW Argos. Love how it all turned out.
Cyndy says
Oh what a beautiful combination! SW Argos is another favorite! 🙂

Thanks so much Jenny! So many gorgeous cabinet paint colors, not enough cabinets to paint right?! It’s a good thing you and I are not choosing, we could never make a decision we love so many colors! haha! xo

Beautiful! What type floors do you have in your kitchen? Thanks!

Thank you so much for your article. I have a dominant paint color Mexicali Tourquois nearby the kitchen cabinets we want to paint. We will do light white counter tops with a new color for the painted wood cabinets. If you could suggest a good neutral balanced color family and finish from your selections in the article for the cabinets I would really appreciate this! We’re going to do pecan floors.

we are moving into a home that had mold in it and was very pleased that we go to keep the kitchen cabinets. but the top and the bottom cabinets don’t match neither in color nor style. the top cabinets are original built-to-fit cabinets with a speckled paint of brown and ivory colors with just a flat door and the bottom cabinets are new with a light oak with raised panel fronts. the counter top is a speckled green/gray/brown mixture. and the back splash was a silver tin stamped (daughter called it older than the MonaLisa). W-ay too much mixture of colors for me!!! there are 2 windows in the kitchen, so some natural lighting. i want to paint the cupboards so they both match a gray color to brighten things up and i want to put down an Asher Pine distressed flooring and an oak kitchen table. i don’t know what color to paint the walls? hoping to keep away from the heaviness of the browns in the counter top. i have looked at sooooo many different colors and my brain is mushy. i still need to deal with the living room which is being opened to the kitchen. need to flow from room to room nicely. But living room walls have to work well with a medium brown colored leather couch, loveseat and chair. do you have any advise on a gray tone that will work with both those rooms?

What type of finish do you use, is it satin?
Cyndy says
I always recommend matte finish. Depending on what paint brand it’s called satin or matte.
Judith Clark says
Cyndy,
When you recommend a matte finish is that for walls and cabinetry or just walls? Thank you!
Carina says
HI Cindy! What is the color of the paint of the cabinet used in the second picture and again the last picture with the 3 white pendant lights? Thank you!
