I have a VERY special treat for you guys today! I cannot tell you just how excited I am about today’s Designer Spotlight highlighting one of my favorite interior design firms; Simons Design Studio.
Last year during the 2017 Salt Lake City Parade of Homes, I walked in to tour a beautiful modern farmhouse built by Magleby Construction and instantly fell in love and was completely blown away by the design work in the home. From the color palette, to the perfect choices in textures and accents, to the smallest of design details, I knew that I had to find out more about the designer of this amazing home.
I have toured 100’s of homes over the last 10 years that I have been blogging and I knew immediately as I walked through this home that I was seeing something truly extraordinary created by a very talented designer. I not only found out a lot more about Simons Design Studio but I also connected with the talented founder Shawn Simons. I have been fortunate to visit with Shawn at length about her design work and tour several more of her projects this year during the 2018 Salt Lake Parade of Homes.
Shawn Simons has been designing homes for more than 25 years. Four years ago, Shawn launched Simons Design Studio in the Salt Lake area.
Shawn with the Simons Design Studio team:
I want to start off first by walking you though the Magleby Construction farmhouse that I toured last year when I was first introduced to Shawn and her team’s design work.
When I walked through the Magleby farmhouse, I knew immediately that the designer was involved with this project from the beginning because every detail from the exterior finishes to every single detail in the interior was chosen with purpose to layer and compliment the overall project. You don’t see that very often where the designer is this involved in pre-construction and I wish I saw it more because of all of the customized elements. I found out later that Simons Design Studio works very closely with Magleby Construction in Salt Lake on many of their new construction projects.
Just take a look at how everything from the wood beams, cabinetry design, flooring and overall layout all beautiful work together and are layered so harmoniously!
It’s no coincidence that Shawn and her team found their inspiration from the views of the Salt Lake City mountains in the that you see through the large living room windows. Can you believe this view?!
I asked Shawn where she finds of all of her inspiration for her projects and she told me:
“Anywhere I can! I love nature, and take note of how our senses respond to the colors and textures in nature. Anyone who has been through our projects will see that we LOVE to use wood! Nothing warms a space like wood. We love to mix woods, metals, and textures, to create an organic space, that we believe is more timeless than trendy.”Â
The white cabinetry mixed with natural wood really got my attention last year in this home and I think it was such a stunning and original option. This is such a fresh idea and great way to compromise if you want a way to mix in white cabinetry with natural wood.
I also asked Shawn what she thought was the most important element to incorporate into a space is to give it an updated vibe. I knew before I asked what her answer would be because she does it so well and she said:Â
“Lighting! Â Lighting and a few updated throw pillows and/or a rug can change the whole feel of the room.”
Shawn and her team do everything so beautifully and the lighting is always so “next-level” in Simons Design Studio spaces, which is also such a treat to see! For example, this area over the kitchen windows was the perfect spot for statement lighting but also functional and the team nailed it with these gorgeous brass arm lamps!
Perfect lighting, natural wood tones and natures color palette mixed with light design layers is such a stunning mix!
I also loved how the black metal finishes mixed with brass were carried through the home so perfectly. I think this is such a smart idea to pick one main metal finish and carry it through for cohesiveness but add a second metal to accent. In this case, matte black metal was primary and the brass was used as the secondary accent.
Because Shawn and the rest of her team are involved are involved most of the time in the pre-construction of new homes, design decisions are are made before the home is built and built into the home. For example, the stairway to the second floor and basement level is right in the center of this open house plan so Shawn and her team were able to envision and incorporate design elements into the stairs that made it a beautiful focal point/design element in the space.
I also noticed through all of Simons Design Studio’s projects that I have seen that the ceiling is never forgotten. They incorporate either statement lighting, unique ceiling angles or beam patterns that really make a beautiful statement.
The blue/gray shiplapped powder room is absolutely breathtaking!
The combination mudroom and laundry room was beautifully designed and laid out to not only maximize space but to be light and airy.
The bedrooms in this home are so serene and cozy.
When I toured this home last year, I was so excited to see as I walked out into the garage that Simons Design Studio had several design boards/palettes laid out not only for the farmhouse but other home design possibilities in this beautiful Magleby community located in the Herriman, Utah area.
Here’s the design board for the farmhouse home:

There is so much more I want to show you on other Simons Studio Design projects that have just inspired me so much. Here’s a few more of my pictures from some of their other projects! Next week, I will be sharing more details and images from this year’s Parade of Homes that Shawn and her team designed.
Here are some sneak peeks!
While Simons Design Studio are located in Salt Lake City area, they can design just about anywhere and have done projects in other parts of the country remotely. They can also do e-Design and can help with all of the design elements, whether for a whole home or design work on a smaller scale for a room or two, they can help. Shawn and her team have access to great sources for lighting, furnishings and furniture that are not available to the public, so if you see something in today’s tour that you’re interested in, you can contact Simons Design to order the item directly from them via email at: office@simonsdesignstudio.com
I have been so excited to connect with Shawn and share her projects with you! Shawn is such a joy in person and I was thrilled to be able to pick her brain and get to know her. I will keep you posted here on her future projects and don’t forget that next week, I will be sharing more from Simons Design Studio and this year’s Parade of Homes.

WOW! what an incredible home!!
It really makes a difference when everything is thought out and goes together. They say the devil is in the details, but maybe we should say the design is in the details 🙂
This is the second fabulous home I have seen today with the light wood featured..maybe the start of a trend.
Cyndy says
Isn’t it amazing?! What’s really interesting is that this home was actually designed and built almost two years ago! Shawn and her team were the first that I saw incorporating more natural wood tones and mixing white cabinetry with the wood. They are really visionaries when it comes to design. Such a treat to see! Thanks for your note! 🙂

Awesome, Cyndy! Thank you for bringing in these designs from other places we may not be able to see in person. Lots of things to think about. Really like how wood and paint are used together.

My pleasure Virginia! As you probably figured out, I’m a huge fan of Simons Design! So inspiring! Thanks for your note! 🙂
