Creative Garden Container Pot Combinations and Tips

 

 

Spring is right around the corner and I’m SO ready to do a little planting around the house. Today, I wanted to share some creative garden container pot ideas and tips/tricks to hopefully inspire you with some pretty possibilities and unique flower/plant combinations.

 

I love the mix different plants and flowers in beautiful pots and as they grow and get full, they look so pretty!

In this pot below, I planted Caladiums, Sweet Potato Vine, Impatiens and Asparagus Fern.

Palms in garden pots actually can do really well if the pot has good drainage.

I like to create groupings of various sized garden pots and mix in both herbs and flowers.

I haven’t spring fluffed my porch yet but hopefully, I’ll get to it in the next couple of weeks.  If you’re curious, you can see my porch revamp projects from last year here.

I don’t have a lot of areas around my home to plant directly in the ground, so I make up for it with container planting. It works out better this way for me because I don’t really have much of a green thumb for gardening. Over the years, I found that I can at the very least keep all my container pots growing and looking beautiful throughout the spring/summer, which means I have something like a light gray thumb, right? 😉

What Plants and Flowers to Choose

Since I live in East Texas, where the weather can be extreme in the summer, I have to be very careful what I choose to plant in my container pots.  I choose plants and flowers based on where the pot will be located.  For pots on my shaded front porch, I choose plants that will thrive in partial sun. For my back patio and around my pool, I choose full sun plants.

 

 

How Many Plants/Flowers in a Pot

I always keep my container pots to 3-5 different plants/flowers.  I prefer three (two flowering and one green) but if I’m mixing greens like ivy, caladiums and ferns, I’ll add just one flower plant and I mix no more than five.

I also like to have something tall, something medium size and something that grows down around the side.

If you choose really hearty plants, all you need is two like sweet potato ivy and petunias, which makes a stunning full container pot.

What’s the Best Dirt and Fertilizer to Use

When it comes to container planting, the kind of dirt that you use is the most important element in keeping paints and flowers growing and alive for the long seasons.  Over the years, I have found that Miracle Grow potting soil with moisture control is the best dirt for container planting.  The moisture control helps to hold moisture longer. The Miracle Grow potting soil has fertilizer already in it, so that helps as well.  I also use a liquid Miracle Grow fertilizer that attach to my hose and fertilize about once every 2 weeks.

Planting Tricks

One of my favorite tricks for containing planting is to mix in rocks, moss balls and grapevine balls. This is a great way to add something visually unique to the mix.  Also, I always slip in a solar light in all of my container pots so they light up at night.

 

Another trick is to buy hanging flower baskets instead of traditional flowers and cut in half and plant.  This gives the appearance of the flowers cascading or growing down the side instantly instead of having to wait weeks for the flowers to grow.

 

 

Glazed tall urns are especially pretty at the front door and a quick trick is to fill urn with empty plastic planter containers and slip in flowers and plants in a container at the top.  Sometimes you can get lucky and find a plastic planter that perfect rests around the top of the lip of the urn.

More Combinations and Inspiration

When it comes to container potting, the combinations and vessels to use are really endless possibilities.  My next door neighbor gets really creative and she likes to use traditional pots filled with plants that she places on this large pulley.
